Ten Best Commencement Speeches

Commencement speeches are typically so powerful and always make me take a break from my life and reevaluate if its where I wanna be.

My favorite speech is definitely that of Stephen Colbert! I am an anti-cynic and his words speak directly to me.

STEVE JOBS AT STANFORD JUNE 12, 2005.

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking....
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life."

GEORGE C. MARSHALL AT HARVARD JUNE 5, 1947.

"Political passion and prejudice should have no part. With foresight, and a willingness on the part of our people to face up to the vast responsibility which history has clearly placed upon our country, the difficulties I have outlined can and will be overcome."

JON STEWART AT HIS ALMA MATER, WILLIAM & MARY MAY 20, 2004.

"I was in New York on 9/11 when the towers came down. I lived 14 blocks from the twin towers. And when they came down, I thought that the world had ended. And I remember walking around in a daze for weeks. And Mayor Giuliani had said to the city, "You've got to get back to normal. We've got to show that things can change and get back to what they were." And one day I was coming out of my building, and on my stoop, was a man who was crouched over, and he appeared to be in deep thought. And as I got closer to him I realized, he was playing with himself. And that's when I thought, "You know what, we're gonna be OK."

PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY AT AMERICAN UNIVERSITY JUNE 10, 1963.

"Some say that it is useless to speak of world peace or world law or world disarmament - and that it will be useless until the leaders of the Soviet Union adopt a more enlightened attitude. I hope they do. I believe we can help them do it. But I also believe that we must reexamine our own attitude - as individuals and as a Nation - for our attitude is as essential as theirs.

TONI MORRISON AT WELLESLEY COLLEGE MAY 28, 2004.

"Although you will never fully know or successfully manipulate the characters who surface or disrupt your plot, you can respect the ones who do by paying them close attention and doing them justice. The theme you choose may change or simply elude you, but being your own story means you can always choose the tone."

STEPHEN COLBERT AT KNOX COLLEGE JUNE 5, 2006.

Now will saying "yes" get you in trouble at times? Will saying "yes" lead you to doing some foolish things? Yes it will. But don't be afraid to be a fool. Remember, you cannot be both young and wise. Young people who pretend to be wise to the ways of the world are mostly just cynics. Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. Because cynics don't learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness, a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us. Cynics always say no. But saying "yes" begins things. Saying "yes" is how things grow. Saying "yes" leads to knowledge. "Yes" is for young people. So for as long as you have the strength to, say "yes."

OPRAH WINFREY AT HOWARD UNIVERSITY MAY 12, 2007.

"You know, I come from good stock. Dr. Swygert was mentioning my grandmother who had a dream for me. And her dream was not a big dream. Her dream was that one day I could grow up -- she used to say, I want you to grow up and get yourself some good white folks, because my grandmother was a maid and she worked for white folks her whole life.
And her idea of having a big dream was to have white folks who at least treated her with some dignity, who showed her a little bit respect. And she used to say, I want you to -- I hope you get some good white folks that are kind to you. And I regret that she didn't live past 1963 to see that I did grow up and get some really good white folks working for me."

RUSSELL BAKER AT CONNECTICUT COLLEGE MAY 27, 1995.

"So I will not waste my breath today pleading with you not to go forth. Instead I limit myself to a simple plea: When you get out there in the world try not to make it any worse than it already is. I thought it might help to give you a list of the hundred most important things you can do to avoid making the world any worse. Since I'm shooting for 15 minutes, however, there is no time to give you all 100. You will have to make do with 10. Short as the public attention span is these days, nobody could remember 100 anyhow. Even 10 may be asking too much.

DAVID FOSTER WALLACE AT KENYON COLLEGE MAY 21, 2005.

And I submit that this is what the real, no bullshit value of your liberal arts education is supposed to be about: how to keep from going through your comfortable, prosperous, respectable adult life dead, unconscious, a slave to your head and to your natural default setting of being uniquely, completely, imperially alone day in and day out. That may sound like hyperbole, or abstract nonsense. Let's get concrete. The plain fact is that you graduating seniors do not yet have any clue what "day in, day out" really means. There happen to be whole, large parts of adult American life that nobody talks about in commencement speeches. One such part involves boredom, routine, and petty frustration. The parents and older folks here will know all too well what I'm talking about.

BONO AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA MAY 17, 2004.
Select quotes below... full text here.
"But I don't want to make you cop to idealism, not in front of your parents, or your younger siblings. But what about Americanism? Will you cop to that at least? It's not everywhere in fashion these days. Americanism. Not very big in Europe, truth be told. No less on Ivy League college campuses. But it all depends on your definition of Americanism. Me, I'm in love with this country called America. I'm a huge fan of America, I'm one of those annoying fans, you know the ones that read the CD notes and follow you into bathrooms and ask you all kinds of annoying questions about why you didn't live up to that. I'm that kind of fan."

Outside of the Box

I recently took on a new position that I am really excited about. It is an incredible challenge although it seems it may be a high pressure job as well. The team I work with is very sharp and are definitely subject matter experts in a number of different fields. It wasn't too long (2 days) before I relearned a very important lesson from one of them. It was something I myself have forgotten.

I was initially excited to get another degree since tuition assistance is available at this company and so I was mulling over the possibilities. Yes ,as nerdy as it sounds, I was excited looking at the various programs and universities I could learn from; a veritable buffet of learning. As I was looking at all these options, a coworker saw my screen and asked me what I was thinking of doing. So I anxiously ran off a list of things I was interested in learning - a MS in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Math, or Mechanical Engineering. We got into a conversation about the pros and cons. We discussed the practicality of each and the possible end result of receiving each of them. Then however, the conversation shifted in an unexpected and surprising way. He asked me if I have ever dismantled a TV. I thought that was a rather strange question in the context we were in.  So I responded with somewhat humorous - "Why would I do that?". He then asked why, I then responded because "I don't know how to do that". He responded again with "So what! That is your mental block my friend. You don't necessarily need a degree to learn those things. You can do anything you want.".

How could this have possibly happened to me?! Have I not been practicing what I preach? Have I started submitting to inside box thinking? This conversation thankfully set forth a series of thoughts in my head about how my own drive and dreams could be compromised.  As a result of whatever factors, dreams could slowly be swept away like a beach ball in the tide. Unless closely and earnestly guarded, could be moved so far away from their initial starting points that they wouldn't be recognizable.

I woke up this morning with a renewed sense of drive and ambition. I don't believe in limits in any way shape or form. The world is already available to encourage all our deepest wants and goals, its merely the sincere sentiment of intention followed by a strong will and determination to make it a reality.

There isn't a person anywhere who isn't capable of doing more than he thinks he can.- Henry Ford

Exercise helps boost Happiness

Is there a link between exercise and happiness?

I came across this article and it holds very true to me. I have found that exercise adversely affects my stress levels. In fact, I have realized that I might have even become addicted to exercise.  A lack of exercise for a prolonged period of time, such as a week or two, and I can definitely notice a negative change in my mood and general demeanor. On the other hand, after hitting the gym for a great workout, I feel like a million bucks and renewed. The benefits of exercise are many both physically and mentally.  Don't do it for anyone else do it for yourself and your own sanity. Stop making excuses and just do it.

If you want a different type of work out besides traditional treadmills and ellipticals then give a group class a shot. The group motivates you to work harder and get a better work out. I personally do Muay Thai, Brazilian JuJitsu and Sil Jun Do. I have heard great things about spinning classes and  Zumba also.

My personal recommendations if your in the Northern NJ area would be:

Retro Fitness - $20/month for a no frills but yet modern gym. Cant complain about that.

Rich Dad Poor Dad - Top Pick

I know this book has been out for quite some time but its still one of those books Im glad I read. The true story is that of a two childhood friends who grow up in the same neighborhood. The father of the first child is a very educated engineer and the father of the other child has his HS Diploma. Now the surprise is that the father whom does not have a formal education is the wealthier of the two fathers. The children then go on a journey to figure out the unintuitive. How could the less educated father be far richer/wealthier then the formally educated and well repute d father?! The the wealthier father shows them how he became so successful and teaches them his own thought pattern and mentality.

A wealth of information is in this book. Some examples that resonated with me were:

- Project Managers love to brag about how many people work underneath them, while good businessmen on the contrary take great pride in having less people underneath them. Thus meaning they have setup a better business model.

- Giving up is a sure way of failing. Persistence and sheer will can get you far.

                                   - Basic accounting is needed to be able to balance income, expenses, assets, and liabilities

                                   - Education is the greatest wealth you can own because its an investment in yourself. The author says he will listen and talk to as many people as he can to learn about things that make them successful.

These are only a few I remember off the of my head. I'm sure I can think of many more. Kiyosaki puts a wealth of information in this book and its definitely worth a glance. Its an easy read since it combines light wittiness with practical information. Its definitely one of my top picks.

Google does Good

So I was just browsing the google websites and I stumbled across something a bit unexpected. Google has a division it seems that deals with more philanthropic issues. It seems quite noble. Take a look, it can be found at Technology-Driven Philanthropy

Some projects include:

Google PowerMeter:
Google PowerMeter is a home energy monitoring tool that gives you the information you need to use less electricity and save money

Google Crisis Response:
Google Crisis Response provides critical information and develops tools to support disaster relief

Flu Vaccine Finder:
Flu Vaccine Finder provides users who search for "flu" during the flu season find tips on how to stay healthy from U.S Health and Human Services and a flu shot which uses Google Maps to show you nearby locations offering seasonal and/or H1N1 flu vaccine.

Also just very recently Google also went as far to help the repressed when it provided Twitter access during the Egyptian Protests. See New Google Service Gives Egyptians Twitter Access During Protests.

I think its really responsible for Google to do this and I think its a great start!
